Advisory Panel Stakeholder Committee

The Aquatic Habitat Restoration Strategy was developed under the guidance and direction of an Advisory Panel. The Panel provided verification, direction, and mentoring to the process. This Advisory Panel also validated the utility of the strategy and provided the agencies and stakeholders with an independent and collective opinion on habitat restoration techniques and their applications on the Toronto waterfront.

The Advisory Panel consists of the following people with Dr. Doug Dodge as its Chair:

  • Dr. Al Christie (retired, Ontario Hydro)
  • Professor Walter Kehm (University of Guelph)
  • Ms. Suzanne Barrett
  • Corresponding Members
  • Dr. John Hartig (Detroit River Navigator)

Members of the Advisory Panel have each provided a significant contribution to fisheries management or habitat restoration within Ontario.

Dr. Doug Dodge has had a long an distinguished career within the Fisheries Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Dr. Dodge pioneered the broad scale inventory of the provinces lakes and rivers, contributed to the Strategic Plan for Ontario Fisheries, and played an important role in the bi-national management of the Great Lakes. Dr. Dodge's role as Chair of the Advisory Panel secures the involvement and contribution of many agencies as well as provides a solid foundation of habitat management experience and project mentoring to TRCA Staff.

Dr. Al Christie had a long and distinguished career with the former Ontario Hydro. Dr. Christie's involvement was critical in the environmental assessment of many major power generating facilities within the province, his skill is the practical applications of fisheries science and pioneered the early research on the predictable association of fish communities and habitat types within the Great Lakes. Dr Christie was also a member of the Conservation Authority and has provided valuable guidance to staff in the past as a Steering Committee member of the Integrated Shoreline Management Plan .

Professor Walter Kehm, has taught within the Faculty of Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph for over twenty years. Professor Kehm provided the habitat philosophy and direction of the Tommy Thompson Park Master Plan, he has advised The Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront on Toronto Waterfront issues, and established the Landscape Research Group at the University to promote his habitat restoration philosophies and assist agencies like Ontario Parks, Parks Canada and various Conservation Authorities. Recently Professor Kehm has assisted staff on various waterfront issues.

Dr. Hartig has had a distinguished career in the University of Michigan, the International Joint Commission, and is currently fulfilling a Presidential Appointment as the Detroit River Navigator and overseeing the restoration of aquatic habitats on the Detroit River waterfront. Dr. Hartig bring an important bi-national perspective to the restoration of Toronto aquatic habitats.

Ms. Suzanne Barrett has had a long association with Toronto waterfront planning activities and was the Director of Environmental Studies for The Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront, and the Director of the Lake Ontario Program at the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. Recently, Ms. Barrett was the Director of the Environmental Program for the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid, and is currently a member of the Public Participation Team for the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation.

The protection, enhancement and long term management of waterfront aquatic habitats is the interest of many agencies, groups and the general public. Critical to the success of this strategy is the cooperation, involvement and support of these major stakeholders.

Initially, the agency/stakeholders on this committee include:

  • Toronto and Region Conservation;
  • Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation;
  • City of Toronto
  • Ministry of Natural Resources
  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
  • Environment Canada;
  • Toronto Port Authority.
