East Bayfront, the newest community on the Waterfront is flanked by Jarvis Street to the east, Parliament Street to the west and Lakeshore Boulevard to the north. This 22 hectare redevelopment will include residential units, employment opportunities, Sugar Beach the new beach on the east side of Jarvis Slip across from Redpath Sugar and Sherbourne Park at the foot of Sherbourne Street.
One of the unique features of this development in keeping with Waterfront Toronto’s sustainability objectives is that the storm water will be addressed onsite rather than treated in the wastewater treatment facility. Some of the rain water will be retained in the buildings to be used as grey water to flush toilets and for irrigation. The rest of it will be collected retained in a tank then processed through a wetland where nature will do the cleaning for us and finally it will be treated to ensure public safety. Ultimately it will be used in the water feature in Sherbourne park for the public’s enjoyment before it’s discharged to the lake as clean water.
The storm water holding tank will be installed at the waters edge underneath the new 1.5 km water’s edge promenade. In conjunction with the tank and the treatment wetland, aquatic habitat will be created to compensate for the potential negative impact as a result of the lake filling. Some of the aquatic habitat will be created immediately adjacent to the tank through the creation of shoals using boulders and different sized aggregate as well as using woody debris to create lots of protection for aquatic life.
